◇ Shang Lu Wins the Three First Prizes

Shang Lu (1414–1486), courtesy name Hongzai, style name Suting, posthumous title Wenyi, was a person from Chunan, Zhejiang. He was born on the 25th day of the second month of the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty.

His parents did not hold official positions, and he was highly regarded by the scholar Wang Rui at an early age. In the tenth year of Xuande (1435), he ranked first in the local examination (Jieyuan). Later, he failed the exams repeatedly and studied diligently in the Taixue, earning the admiration of Li Shimian, the head of the Guozijian. In the tenth year of Zhengtong (1445), he ranked first in the provincial examination (Huiyuan) and then first in the palace examination (Zhuangyuan). Only Huang Guan, who was removed from the list by Zhu Di, and Shang Lu had the honor of winning the three first prizes in the Ming Dynasty.
