◇ Bai Li Xi Raising Cattle Became a Minister
Bai Li Xi, also known as Bai Li Xi, was from Wanyi in Chu (now Nanyang City in Henan Province). He was a famous statesman during the Spring and Autumn period. He was also called Bai Li Xi or Bai Li Zi, and people referred to him as the Five Sheepskin Doctor or the Doctor of Yu State.
In 655 BC, Jin (King Xian of Jin) conquered Yu and captured its ruler and the doctor Bai Li Xi. Since he refused to serve in Jin, he was treated as a slave and was sent to Qin with the princess Mu Ji. On the way to Qin, Bai Li Xi escaped back to Chu.
King Cheng of Chu heard that Bai Li Xi was good at raising cattle, so he ordered Bai Li Xi to raise his cattle.
When the new king of Qin, Ren Hao, heard that Bai Li Xi was a talent, he wanted to pay a large sum of money to redeem Bai Li Xi.
Prince Zhi of Qin's ministers said, “The King of Chu probably does not know Bai Li Xi's talents, which is why he let Bai Li Xi raise cattle. If we pay a large sum of money to redeem him, it would inform the King of Chu that Bai Li Xi is a rare talent.”
King of Qin asked, “Then how should I get Bai Li Xi?”
Prince Zhi said, “We can buy a valuable item cheaply. Use the price of a slave, that is, five black sheep skins, to exchange for Bai Li Xi, so that the King of Chu won't suspect anything.”
