◇ Chenqiao Coup
In 959 AD, Emperor Zhu Rong of the Later Zhou died, and the young Emperor Chai Zongxun, only seven years old, ascended the throne. At that time, Zhao Kuangyin, the Commander-in-Chief of the Palace Guard and Governor of the Songzhou Gui De Army, held real power.
In the spring of 960 AD, Zhengan (now Zhengding, Hebei) and Dingzhou (now Ding County, Hebei) reported that the Northern Han and Liao forces had joined together to attack the Later Zhou, and requested military aid. The Later Zhou government ordered Zhao Kuangyin to lead troops north to resist the enemy. Under the planning of his younger brother Zhao Guangyi, as well as Zhao Pu and Shi Shouxin, Zhao Kuangyin secretly prepared.
On February 3rd, when the army reached Chenqiao Post (now Chenqiao Town, Fuyang County, Henan), a coup was launched. The soldiers were instructed to put a yellow robe on Zhao Kuangyin, making him rebel against the Later Zhou and declare himself emperor. Afterwards, Zhao led the army back to Kaifeng, without burning, killing, or looting. "The Taizu's Chenqiao Coup, he made a pact with the people of the capital: 'No disturbance of the citizens'; upon entering the city, 'the markets remained unchanged.' "
On the third day, Zhao Kuangyin returned to the capital after the Chenqiao Coup. Fan Zhi led Wang Pu and Wei Renpu to question Zhao Kuangyin. Luo Yanhuan, standing before the tent, drew his sword and shouted, "The army has no leader; the generals have decided to appoint the commander as the emperor. Anyone who speaks differently shall be executed!" Wang Pu turned pale, stepped down and bowed, and Fan Zhi also bowed. Zhao Kuangyin personally helped them up and treated them with respect.
After minimal resistance, the Later Zhou Emperor abdicated, and Zhao assumed the throne. "When the Taizu was about to accept the abdication, there was no written document. The Hanlin Academician Tao Gu stood nearby, took it out of his sleeve and presented it, saying, 'It is already done.'"
After ascending the throne, Zhao changed the country name to Song, adopted the era name Jianlong, and established the capital in Kaifeng. Shi Shouxin, Gao Huaidé, Zhang Lingduo, Wang Shenqi, Zhang Guanghan, and Zhao Yanhuì were all granted the titles of regional commanders. This event is known as the "Chenqiao Coup."

◇ Xiao He Pursuing Han Xin Under the Moon
Liu Bang was enfeoffed in Hanzhong by Xiang Yu. Han Xin went to Hanzhong to join him. Xiao He believed Han Xin was a rare talent and repeatedly advised Liu Bang to use him, but Liu Bang refused. Han Xin thought Liu Bang would not use him, so he left. When Xiao He heard of Han Xin’s departure, he was very anxious and did not inform Liu Bang before chasing after Han Xin. Liu Bang mistakenly thought Xiao He had also left him, feeling as if he had lost his right hand.
Later, Xiao He brought Han Xin back. Liu Bang scolded him, saying, “Over fifty people have left since I came to Hanzhong, and you didn’t chase any of them, but you chased Han Xin?”
Xiao He said, “Those who ran away are easy to find, but Han Xin is a rare talent. If you plan to remain king in Hanzhong forever, you don’t need Han Xin. But if you plan to fight Xiang Yu for the throne, you must use him.”
Liu Bang said, “For your sake, let me make him a general.”
Xiao He replied, “That won’t work. He’ll still leave.”
Liu Bang asked, “What if I make him the Grand General?” Xiao He said, “That will work.”
Liu Bang wanted to appoint Han Xin as Grand General, and Xiao He said, “The Great King has always been disrespectful and impolite. Now, if you call Han Xin like a child, he will still leave. If you truly want to appoint him as Grand General, you must choose a good day, fast, and build an altar, solemnly bestowing the title.”
Liu Bang agreed and followed Xiao He’s advice, appointing Han Xin as Grand General.
