◇ Liu Zhiyuan Joins the Army
Liu Zhiyuan (Zhiyuan) was from the Shatuo tribe.
Liu Zhiyuan and his wife Li Sanniang lived at his mother-in-law’s home. His mother-in-law looked down on Liu Zhiyuan because he was poor, tricked him to go to the melon garden, hoping to have him eaten by two melon spirits. At night, Liu Zhiyuan took a spear and fought the melon spirit, entering underground, digging out a sword and military book.
Taking up the sword and military book, he bid farewell to his wife and joined the army, serving under Yue Xun and eventually becoming an inspector.
When the Khitan destroyed the Jin Dynasty, the Central Plains had no ruler. Liu Zhiyuan became emperor in Jinyang.
He changed the country's name to Later Han. He still used the era name "Tianfu" but did not change the calendar.

◇ Gu Linggong Goes Without Armor to Meet the Huihe
Introduction: Gu Ziyi went without armor to meet the Huihe.
In the Tang Dynasty, there was a rebel general named Puguhuain. He incited the Tuyuhun and Huihe to unite their forces and attack the Central Plains. With an army of 300,000, they won battle after battle, advancing directly to Jingyang.
The commander at Jingyang was General Gu Ziyi, who had been sent to quell the rebellion. At that time, he had only over 10,000 elite soldiers. Facing the enemy troops covering the mountains, Gu Ziyi knew the situation was extremely severe. At this moment, Puguhuain died. The Tuyuhun and Huihe lost their mediator and coordinator. Both sides wanted to seize command, and their conflicts gradually intensified. The Tuyuhun camped outside the eastern gate, while the Huihe camped outside the western gate. Gu Ziyi thought, why not take advantage of this to split the two armies?
He secretly sent someone to the Huihe camp to convey his desire to rekindle old friendship with past allies.
The Huihe general Yage Luo was also a man who valued old friendships. Hearing that Gu Ziyi was at Jingyang, he was very happy. However, he said, "Unless we see Grand General Gu ourselves, we will not believe it."
Upon hearing the report, Gu Ziyi decided to personally visit the Huihe camp to meet Yage Luo, rekindle old friendships, and persuade them not to join the Tuyuhun against the Tang.
His generals were afraid that the Huihe might be deceptive and did not allow Gu Ziyi to go. Gu Ziyi said, "For the sake of the country, I have already put my life aside! If I can negotiate successfully, this war will not happen, and the world will be peaceful. What is wrong with that?" He refused to take a bodyguard and only brought a few attendants to go to the Huihe camp.
Yage Luo saw that it was really Gu Ziyi, and was very happy. He hosted a feast for Gu Ziyi and talked warmly. During the banquet, Gu Ziyi said, "The relationship between the Tang and the Huihe has always been good. The Huihe made great contributions in quelling the Anshi Rebellion, and the Tang has never treated you poorly. Why would you now ally with the Tuyuhun to attack the Tang? The Tuyuhun wants to use you to fight against the Tang and gain benefits for themselves!"
Yage Luo angrily said, "Grand General Gu is right. We were deceived by them! We are willing to fight the Tuyuhun together with the Tang."
Both sides immediately swore an alliance. Upon learning of the situation, the Tuyuhun realized the sudden change was unfavorable for them and retreated overnight. Gu Ziyi and the Huihe united to pursue and defeated the Tuyuhun's 100,000 troops. The Tuyuhun suffered a major defeat, and for a long time, the border was peaceful.
