◇Liang Hao Passes the Imperial Examination
Li Hao was a scholar, born in 963 AD, with the courtesy name Taisu, from Xucheng, Yanzhou (now Dongping, Shandong).
In the Yungxi period, he passed the Jinshi examination at eighteen years old. He continued to take the exam but failed.
He started taking the exams from the Tianshui period, going through the Later Han and Later Zhou dynasties, taking the exams every year, but never passing. He vowed not to be satisfied unless he became the top scholar.
At the age of eighty-two, during the Yungxi second year of Emperor Zhenzong, he finally became the top scholar.

◇Gao Sifu Achieves Fame at Fifty
Gao Shi, with the courtesy name Dafu, was from Cangzhou, Bohai (now Jing County, Hebei).
Born in poverty, he even once lived by begging, but he remained diligent in his studies. He had grand ambitions and the desire to establish himself for the country. He went to Chang'an from his hometown of Songzhong, believing that his talents would easily earn him an official post. Unfortunately, he was not appointed, so he returned to Songzhong.
In the 18th year of Kaiyuan, war broke out between Tang and the Khitan and Xi tribes on the northeastern frontier. Gao Shi, driven by patriotism and the desire to serve on the border, sought to gain glory by joining the military. He also noticed the corruption within the army, and since the war ended in defeat, he returned to Songzhong in sorrow. After returning, he continued farming while studying, beginning his literary creation and gradually gaining recognition for his poetry. In the eighth year of Tianbao, at the age of fifty, Gao Shi passed the "You Dao Ke Shi" (the examination for virtuous and talented officials), and was appointed as the county magistrate of Fengqiu.
In the twelfth year of Tianbao, Gao Shi, recommended by the judge Tian Qiu, joined the staff of the Western Regions Commander-in-Chief Guoshu Han, and was appointed as a military officer and chief recorder.
During the An Lushan Rebellion, Luoyang fell in December. Gao Shi returned to Chang'an to explain the reasons for the military defeat to the emperor, and was promoted to the rank of Judicial Inspector and Censor.
When Prince Lin of Yong launched a rebellion, Gao Shi was appointed as the Chief Administrator of Yangzhou, the Governor of Huainan, and the Commissioner of Inspection. After Prince Lin’s rebellion was quelled, Gao Shi was rewarded.
In the first year of Guangde, Gao Shi was promoted to the Governor of the Western Sichuan Commandery, and also served as the Governor of the Eastern Sichuan Commandery. In these positions, Gao Shi demonstrated his political and military talents and concern for the people.
In the second year of Guangde, the Tibetan forces captured the three provinces of Song, Wei, and Bao.
