◇ Ziya Abandons His Official Post

When Jiang Ziya was a fortune-teller, he saw a woman was transformed into a jade lute demon, so he held her tightly, even hitting her with an inkstone. Prime Minister Bi Gan passed by, asked the reason, and took Jiang Ziya to see King Zhou. Jiang Ziya burned the lute demon with three kinds of true fire before the king, and King Zhou appointed him as a junior minister.

Daji wanted to take revenge for the jade lute demon, so she asked King Zhou to order Jiang Ziya to build the Lutai. Jiang Ziya criticized the king, and King Zhou ordered his execution. Jiang Ziya escaped by water. After returning home, Jiang Ziya told Ma Shi about going to Xi Qi, and Ma Shi wanted to divorce him. So Jiang Ziya went alone to Xi Qi (the capital of King Wen of Zhou).

At Xi Qi, Jiang Ziya lived in Panxi Gorge, fishing. He met King Wen of Zhou, who was eager for talents. Under the sincere request of King Wen, Jiang Ziya was appointed as a teacher, assisting King Wen.

◇ Guan Zhong Is Welcomed with Three Fragrant Baths

(Three fragrant baths: washing with fragrance three times and applying perfume three times, showing respect and honor for the person.)

King Huan of Qi announced Guan Zhong as prime minister, ordered Bao Shuya to supervise the construction of the official platform, and together with Xi Peng decided on the auspicious date for the ceremony. The king declared that he would not attend court, go out, or receive anyone for three days, and would be perfumed with incense in the palace for the ceremony.

During the ceremony, Guan Zhong knelt: "Thank you, my lord." Then he rose and said, "My lord, I have a request."

Huan: "Minister, please speak."

"I am poor. As the saying goes, poverty cannot make one rich. I fear I cannot bear the responsibility of the prime minister's position."

Bao Shuya was startled and pulled Guan Zhong's robe, but Guan Zhong ignored it.
