During the Han Dynasty, Zhongli was originally a general who lost an opportunity and was not valued by the court, so he resigned and retreated into the Zhongnan Mountains to cultivate. Later, he received the immortal teachings from the Eastern Lord and became an immortal, becoming the leader of the Eight Immortals. According to legend, he was originally named Zhongli Quan, a person from the Tang Dynasty, who called himself "Zhongli Quan, the World's Wandering Man." After meeting the Eastern Lord, he entered Kongdong Mountain to practice three times and thus attained immortality, known as "Yunfang Xiansheng."
