[Hexagram of Litigation]

Sixth Hexagram: The Hexagram of Litigation (Heaven over Water)

Li. Having faith, cautious and alert, it is favorable in the middle, but ominous in the end. It is advantageous to meet a person of virtue, but not suitable for crossing a large river.

The Image says: Heaven and water move in opposite directions, hence litigation. The superior person takes this as a lesson to be careful when starting a project.

Explanation in Vernacular:

The Hexagram of Litigation: Although there may be benefits (capturing prisoners), one must remain vigilant and cautious. Matters are favorable in the middle, but ominous at the end. Divination of this line is advantageous for meeting a noble lord, but not for crossing a large river.

The Image commentary says: The upper trigram is Qian, representing heaven, and the lower trigram is Kan, representing water. Heaven and water are separated, their flows opposing, which indicates a conflict in affairs. This is the image of the Hexagram of Litigation. The superior person, observing this image, understands that disputes should be avoided, and thus must be extremely cautious from the very beginning of any undertaking.

Interpretation by Zhang Mingren from Taiwan:

Litigation: Represents the image of legal disputes and conflicts. It signifies a major ominous sign. When matters escalate to the point of going to court, it may require resolution through legal means! Everything is unfavorable, and there has already been a lot of verbal conflict and confrontation, reaching the stage where both sides must expose their positions and attack each other!

  • Explanation: Being entangled in legal cases.
  • Characteristics: Stubborn, competitive, quick-witted, with good eloquence, prone to offending others, self-reliant and strong-willed.
  • Fortune: All things are blocked, frequent harm, being slandered and falling into schemes, an unfortunate period. It's better to forgive when possible, go along with the flow, avoid further disputes, otherwise everything will be unfavorable.
  • Family Fortune: Family members are in discord, suffering from verbal disputes, and there is a risk of separation.
  • Disease: The condition is serious, related to the waist, blood, urinary system, or head ailments.
  • Pregnancy: There will be no complications during childbirth, and it will be safe.
  • Children: There is a misunderstanding between parents and children, making communication difficult. Children are born to be hardworking, with a weak bond with their parents, often facing hardship and sorrow.
  • Capital Flow: Difficult to grasp the key points, hard to succeed.
  • Business: Due to improper handling, there are conflicts and disputes, often resulting in losses, which is not favorable.
  • Waiting for Someone: They will not come. Even if they do, there will be a dispute between them.
  • Searching for a Person: This person left in anger due to a dispute, and there is a risk to their life. It is difficult to find them, so try searching towards the northwest and north.
  • Lost Item: It will not appear.
  • Traveling Out: There will be many changes on the way, it is advisable to change the date of travel.
  • Exam: Not ideal.
  • Litigation: Both sides will suffer losses. It is advisable to seek mediation from a third party, as prolonged disputes are unbeneficial.
  • Seeking Employment: Difficult to achieve.
  • Changing Profession: Unfavorable.
  • Starting a Business: Not advisable.

[Middle Lower Hexagram] Heaven over Water (Litigation Hexagram) Caution Against Litigation

64 Hexagrams of the Zhouyi, the 6th Hexagram

Image says A matter within the heart is hard to accomplish, like two people competing for the same path. Rain falls on both sides, wanting to go first, who would give way?

This hexagram consists of two different trigrams, Kan below and Qian above, forming a mutual "complementary hexagram" with Xū (Need). Qian represents strength and vitality, while Kan represents danger and difficulty. Strength and danger, vitality and difficulty, oppose each other, leading to litigation. Litigation is not a good thing, and one must be cautious and vigilant.

Career Initially smooth, beneficial, but later obstacles arise. One must be cautious and watchful, avoiding stubbornness and staying away from legal disputes. If possible, it is better to yield and seek resolution, remaining on the right path to avoid unexpected disasters. Getting involved in litigation, even if victorious, ultimately leads to loss, resulting in more loss than gain.

Business Harmony brings wealth, and sometimes losing is gaining. Do not pursue unjust profits. In commercial negotiations, uphold fairness and mutual benefit, and avoid conflicts as much as possible. This will lead to a positive outcome.

Aspirations for Fame Unfavorable. One lacks the strength to compete, so one should remain pure and patient, encouraging oneself and not being aggressive. Seek help from influential people to overcome difficulties early.

Traveling Out There will be many changes on the way, it is advisable to reschedule the trip.

Marriage and Love Although not entirely satisfactory, it is still compatible. Both parties should handle life in a gentle manner.

Decision Making Competitive and ambitious, dissatisfied with the status quo, striving to change destiny and surpass others. Intelligent mind, quick response, with the help of a benefactor. However, lacking perseverance, easily showing off, offending others, leading to legal problems. It is advisable to accept reality, follow nature, be content, and stop at the right time. Learn from the experience and take precautions, which can lead to success and fame.
