Lesson Three: Minor Arcana
The Major Arcana expresses a common theme, while the Minor Arcana expands these themes into reality, showing how they operate in daily events. The Minor Arcana represents your concerns, your actions, and your emotions, which shape the script of life.
The Minor Arcana consists of 56 cards, divided into four groups: Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles (Author's note: many tarot decks use different names for these four groups. The selected names usually reflect the theme of each group) (Phoenix's note: many people translate Pentacles as "Coins," indeed, its appearance is a golden coin with a five-pointed star pattern. In fact, the root "pen" means "five," and Pentacle is synonymous with Pentagram, referring to the five-pointed star used in witchcraft, typically as an amulet. Translating it as "Coins" might make learners completely understand it as money, leading to misinterpretation. Therefore, I use the term "Pentacles" here). Each group has specific meanings.
· Wands
Wands represent creation, action, and movement. They are associated with qualities such as passion, exploration, adventure, and confidence. This group corresponds to the "Yang" or masculine aspect in Chinese philosophy, and is associated with the element of fire. A pile of flickering flames is the perfect symbol of the power of Wands. This energy radiates outward, making people passionately involved in matters.
· Cups
Cups represent emotions and inner experiences. They describe inner states, feelings, and relationships. This energy is inwardly focused. Cups correspond to the "Yin" or feminine aspect in Chinese philosophy, and are associated with the element of water. Water can flow, fill gaps, endure, yet be fickle, making it a typical symbol for Cups.
· Swords
Swords represent intellect, thought, and reason. They are related to justice, sincerity, and morality. The associated element of Swords is air. A clear, open sky, free of clouds, everywhere bright, is the best depiction of the clear-minded spirit of Swords. This group may also lead to disharmony and misfortune. Our minds are a valuable asset, but if not guided by wisdom from the heart, they may lead us astray.
· Pentacles
Pentacles represent practicality, security, and material aspects. They relate to specific needs when dealing with problems. The associated element of Pentacles is earth. The spirit of Pentacles is to praise the beauty of nature, interact with plants and animals, and experience physical sensations. Pentacles also represent various forms of prosperity, success, and wealth. Sometimes this group is also called "Coins." In this material world, when exchanging goods or enjoying services, "Coins" are certainly the most obvious symbol.
Each group has its own unique characteristics. Our daily experiences are a mix of these four types of traits. Tarot divination will tell you, at any given moment, how these four different energies influence your life ((See "List of Group Characteristics").
