Tarotdivination Learning for Beginners (Part 1)
For a beginner who is interested in Tarot cards, how should they start from understanding to learning?
The master here provides some suggestions.
First, you need a book, a good Chinese book.
Cards are obviously important, but most Chinese Tarot books come with Tarot cards, so the master does not list it as the primary condition here.
There are many Chinese Tarot card books published in China, and there are 4X books introduced in "Yi Xin Ge", which should list 90% of the books. Although there are many books, what are the 'good' Tarot books? Detailed book introductions will not be written here now, but a few books that are generally recognized as 'good' will be provided. (Here, we do not consider the cards included, but only the content of the books. The order is based on the master's connection sequence, and has nothing to do with the ranking of the books.)
1. Reversing the Tarot Cards
2. Introduction to the Mystical Tarot Cards
3. Tarot Card Oracle
4. Don't Turn the Cards After the Lights Go Out - Tarot Secrets
5. You Are Already Very Familiar with the Tarot
6. Tarot Prophecy Secrets
7. What's This Tarot: A Beginner's Self-Study Manual
Among them, 'You Are Already Very Familiar with the Tarot' is particularly praised and has become almost a textbook. Because this book is translated from the most widely circulated, most popular, and most standardized 'Rider-Waite Tarot Deck', known as the 'Yellow Book'. The original text of this book is well-written, and the translator has almost faithfully translated the content of the book. Plus, the current market availability of the 'Rider-Waite Tarot Deck' is convenient. Therefore, if you want to recommend, it must be this book. However, if you are a complete beginner who has never touched it before, the master actually suggests that you put this book aside first and just pick up any book with keywords and general basic meanings to read. Because although the content of this book is good and explained in detail, it may be slightly difficult for someone who has no prior experience. Imagine a person who hasn't even heard of the 'Fool' = 'Adventure' trying to understand the meaning of the dog nearby and the cliff ahead – would that be confusing?
Therefore, the most basic thing the master hopes is that you memorize the keywords and meanings of each card, and then read this book, so that you can progress step by step.
Second, we can choose a good deck.
The recommended basic deck is naturally the 'Rider-Waite Tarot Deck'. Whether it is the 22 cards included in the book or a 78-card deck costing 6 to 7 hundred yuan, it is better to choose the Rider-Waite deck. There are three reasons:
1. Easy to purchase.
In the Taiwanese market, the 'Rider-Waite Tarot Deck' is already quite easy to obtain, and compared to other 78-card decks, its price is relatively cheaper. If buying a deck requires a lot of effort, I believe the desire to learn will be lost.
2. Easy to get related books.
Since the 'Rider-Waite Tarot Deck' has become a globally recognized standard deck and is currently the mainstream deck, there are countless related writings, both in books and online. As long as you have the intention, you can easily find materials in any language. For someone who is interested, this is certainly very convenient.
3. Simple card meanings.
The single card meanings of the Rider-Waite deck are simple and clear. If you haven't memorized the meanings, you can still 'tell a story from the picture', usually getting around 60-70% right. For a beginner, it won't be misleading, confused, or even influenced. (Not to mention the 'cheating Rider-Waite' that directly prints the card meanings on the back... Haha, I really want one...)
After memorizing the basic meanings of the cards, buying a good book and a good deck, the next thing to do is to memorize the meanings of the cards more thoroughly... (-___-)
Then, read the books you bought carefully.
Tarot Divination Learning for Beginners (Part 2)
Some people mentioned whether to use a cloth cover, use a dark or deep-colored cloth when calculating the cards, and so-called 'sanctification rituals', etc.
1. Using a cloth cover.
The master himself is used to using a cloth cover and putting it in a cloth bag. Why is that?
Of course, because the cards are 'expensive.'
Since the master is used to carrying the cards with him, if he doesn't wrap them in a soft cloth and put them in a cloth bag, the cards will easily get folded... Not to mention that the cards the master uses are out of print.
2. Using a cloth for calculation.
The master also has this habit, but it's not necessarily a dark color. Using a dark-colored cloth mainly helps the diviner focus, otherwise, colorful cloths combined with a noisy environment would make it easy to be distracted.
Additionally, placing a layer of cloth is for the sake of 'cleanliness.' Otherwise, how can you dare to perform divination on an oily table?
Furthermore, based on the mindset of 'cherishing items,' the master suggests that when choosing a cloth, it's best to use cotton or silk-based fabrics, with a smooth surface without patterns, so as not to scratch the card surfaces.
Also, when choosing a cloth, try to select a thicker fabric, so that the cloth doesn't slide around due to being too light during shuffling, causing trouble.
3. 'Sanctification Rituals.'
Whether to use it or not, there are many different opinions. The master avoids controversy and doesn't say much here. Regarding the methods of sanctification rituals, the master will post them when he has time. (The master has seen diviners using this method abroad, by the way.)
After that, regarding the shuffling method, please follow the shuffling method in the book first, and don't explain too much about theoretical aspects here. Just hope that everyone can shuffle the cards evenly and thoroughly. According to the master's experience, each card needs to be rotated three and a half times to be considered thoroughly shuffled. When shuffling, also pay attention to the strength of your hands, using the force of your fingertips, and ensure that each card is rotated, not just moving in the same direction from top to left, from left to bottom, etc.
When performing divination, it is recommended to interpret only one card at the beginning, and not to engage in card layout divination immediately. Try to be familiar with the interpretation of each card and be able to derive different answers based on different questions. Then start with card layout divination.
