Tarot Card Shuffling and Cutting Tutorial

In Tarot divination, each time you analyze and calculate a question, you need to reshuffle and cut the cards again. This step cannot be skipped. Let me first talk about some small issues during divination. On some websites abroad, Tarot divination is described as a very mysterious and mystical process. Therefore, many tools are needed, such as fire, small knives, chalices, etc. They also say that there should be a special tablecloth for divination and boxes for storing the cards, etc.

As for these, I don't think they are absolutely necessary. However, I have prepared a small square towel to place on the table when shuffling the cards. The reason is that my table surface is too smooth, and the cards tend to spin and not shuffle evenly. By placing a small towel, it increases friction without damaging or dirtying my cards (as I often carry the cards with me and help friends with divinations). For friends like me who often take the cards to various places, I recommend finding a small towel you like. First, it protects your own cards, and second, seeing the familiar background color every time you do divination helps you focus and avoid distractions.

Tarot Cards How to Shuffle

One: Place the cards face down on the table, focus your mind, and don't think of anything else. Shuffle the cards in the same direction with both hands, making circular motions to evenly shuffle the cards. The direction of shuffling should be the same as the direction you used when you first opened the cards. While shuffling, silently recite the question you want to predict and think about the layout you will use. Listen to your inner voice, and you will feel when it's time to stop. At this point, slowly gather the cards (don't forget to still proceed in a clockwise manner), and finally restore them into a stack, placed horizontally.

Two: Gently gather the cards together and place them horizontally in front of you. Any cards that are still standing should be laid down in the same direction as when you shuffled them. Now your cards form a neat stack, placed horizontally in front of you. The shuffling is now complete.

Additionally, some divination rules require the person asking the question to concentrate their will and silently recite their question. In this case, you just need to keep your mind free of distractions; when to stop shuffling is decided by the person asking the question.

How to Cut the Tarot Cards

Cutting the cards is the moment for the person asking the question to shine. After you have shuffled the cards and stacked them face down, you should ask the person asking the question to cut the cards. Of course, if the person asking the question is yourself, you need to cut the cards yourself.

One: The shuffled cards are placed horizontally in front of you. For clarity, we call them the first stack. With your right hand, take about half of the cards from the stack and gently place them below the first stack, forming the second stack. Be careful not to change the direction. Then, with your right hand, take about half of the cards from the second stack and gently place them on top of the first stack, forming the third stack. Again, be careful not to change the direction.

Two: With your right hand, take the first stack and place it on top of the second stack, combining them into one stack. Then take this combined stack and place it on top of the third stack, forming one stack. At this point, your cards form a neat stack, placed horizontally in front of you. This completes one round of cutting the cards.

Note: There is no unified rule regarding the number of times to cut the cards. Chinese people like the number three, so you can cut the cards three times. However, I have seen many foreign websites recommending cutting twice, and I am also accustomed to cutting twice. In short, there are no taboos here; it's up to your own habits.
