In ancient times, food was scarce and people often went hungry one day and ate well the next, their bodies were very weak. A young man named Ji decided to taste all kinds of plants and fruits in the world to find grain that could be used as staple food for people. He told his decision to Nuwa (wa), and Nuwa supported him. She also let her five sons, Rice, Millet, Wheat, Soybeans (shu), and Hemp, carry five different colored bags - white, yellow, red, green, and black - to be Ji's attendants, following Ji to search for seeds. Gradually, they filled the five bags with grain seeds. One day, they saw a tall plant with red ears on a mountain and climbed up. Upon reaching the top, they looked down and found five valleys below, with mountain springs flowing, fertile soil and lush grass. So Ji asked his five attendants each to choose a valley, sow the seeds and cultivate them. He himself opened a piece of wasteland on the mountain top and planted the tall plant with red ears. Later, people named the grains after their names, and because they were cultivated in five valleys, they were collectively called "Five Grains". The variety that Ji planted was then called Sorghum.
