Emperor Wu of Han is well-known in Chinese history; 'Jiao' refers to Chen Shi, the original wife of Emperor Wu Liu Che of the Han Dynasty, the Empress Xiaowu of the Han Dynasty.
Chen Shi's childhood name was 'A Jiao'; her father was Chen Wu, the Marquis of Tangyi, and the family of the Marquis of Tangyi was a family of noble officials who had contributed to the founding of the Han Dynasty. Her mother was Liu Piao, the Princess of Gantao, the only sister of Emperor Jingdi Liu Qi, and she was an important figure in the court at that time. Chen A Jiao was deeply loved by her maternal grandmother, Empress Dowager Dou, the mother of Emperor Jingdi, since she was young.

Emperor Jingdi's concubine Wang Mei Ren (Wang Zhi) had a son named Liu Zhi (later changed to Liu Che), who was the ninth son (or tenth, there is some dispute). Emperor Jingdi had fourteen sons, among whom the favorite concubine Li Ji gave birth to the most children, including the crown prince Liu Rong. The concubine Bo did not have any children, and Emperor Jingdi initially appointed Liu Rong, the eldest son from a secondary wife, as the crown prince.
The Princess of Gantao wanted to marry her daughter Chen A Jiao to Crown Prince Liu Rong, hoping that she would become empress in the future. She sent someone to ask Li Ji's opinion, but Li Ji was angry because the Princess of Gantao often recommended beautiful women to Emperor Jingdi to share his favor, and she firmly refused. The Princess of Gantao was furious and thus began to consider removing the crown prince.
One day, the Princess of Gantao held Liu Che and asked, "Cherish, when you grow up, do you want to marry?" The King of Jiaodong Liu Che said, "Yes." The princess then asked Liu Che which of the more than a hundred palace ladies and attendants he wanted, and Liu Che said none. Finally, the princess pointed to her daughter Chen A Jiao and asked, "How about A Jiao?" Liu Che then smiled and replied, "She's good! If I can marry A Jiao, I will build a golden house for her." This is the origin of the idiom "Golden House for A Jiao." This story is recorded in the book "Han Wu Story" by Ban Gu of the Han Dynasty.
