Since birth, humans have begun to pursue a free and happy love life. It is not only due to the needs of reproduction and breeding, but also due to the spiritual needs of human's noble emotional pursuits. Thus, the god of love and the god of marriage arose accordingly, becoming the spiritual pillar for countless lovers seeking free love.

The Ancestor of the Matchmaker God

Nüwa is a widely and long-venerated female deity in Chinese folk beliefs. She is regarded as the creator deity and the ancestor deity. According to legend, Nüwa could create all things. Her greatest achievements were mending the sky with stones and creating humans from yellow clay and water.

Before creating humans, Nüwa created on the first day of the first lunar month a chicken, on the second day a dog, on the third day a sheep, on the fourth day a pig, on the fifth day a cow, and on the sixth day a horse. On the seventh day, she began to make humans using yellow clay and water. Considering that people should continue generation after generation without end, she established the system of marriage, promoting the union of men and women to have children. Therefore, Nüwa became the first matchmaker, and was later revered as the Matchmaker God, also known as "Gao Mei." The ceremonies held to worship this deity of marriage were very grand. Temples dedicated to the Goddess Nüwa or the High Temple were built, and the highest form of sacrifice, known as "Ta Lao" (including a pig, a cow, and a sheep), was used to honor her. These temples still exist today in regions such as Luoning in Shandong, Hejin in Shanxi, and Yudu in Jiangxi. The emergence of the deity Nüwa reflects the fact that in the matrilineal clan society, marriage centered around women, and the female clan leader controlled all the marriage matters of the entire clan.
