The fourth day of the first lunar month is for welcoming the "Five Roads" Wealth Gods;Welcoming the Five Roads originally refers to welcoming the five road gods, which later evolved into welcoming the Five Road Wealth Gods. In the past, merchants usually welcomed the Five Road Wealth Gods on the evening of the fourth day after their Spring Festival holidays, and then opened for business on the fifth day to seek good luck.
On the afternoon of the fourth day, the preparations for the ceremony of welcoming the Five Roads began at three o'clock, and ended around nine or ten o'clock in the evening. First, the altar tables were set up, generally using two eight-foot tables joined together. The first table has fruits such as Guangju (a type of citrus) and sugarcane, symbolizing broad wealth and a sweet life; the second table has pastries, symbolizing promotion and longevity; the third table is the main table, offering a whole pig, chicken, and fish, along with soup made from gold ingots. The half-table contains rice, noodles, and vegetables, with one bowl of "road head rice" with a large green onion inserted, and a red flower called "Thousand-Year Red" inside the onion tube, symbolizing a bustling and prosperous year. The wine and dishes on the third table can only be served after the Five Road Wealth Gods have been welcomed. Everyone hopes for wealth, hoping that the Wealth Gods will bring gold and silver to their homes and make them rich in the new year.
The host must carry incense and candles to the five directions' temples to invite the Wealth Gods. Every time a Wealth God is invited, a string of hundred-child firecrackers is set off at the door. After all the Wealth Gods are invited, the host and staff take turns bowing to the Wealth Gods. After the bows, the original altar's horse curtain is burned, indicating the respectful send-off of the Wealth Gods. Only then is the ceremony considered complete.
