Why is Marriage Avoided on the Mid-Autumn Festival

Reason One
The date of the Mid-Autumn Festival is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. The first and fifteenth days of each month are considered important days, and in some local customs, the first and fifteenth days of the month are avoided for weddings. Therefore, the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month is also avoided for weddings.
Reason Two
In the mythological story of Chang'e flying to the moon, the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month is the day when Chang'e and Hou Yi separated. This is not a happy ending. Therefore, getting married on the Mid-Autumn Festival day is considered unlucky, and it is believed that couples cannot grow old together if they get married on this day.
Reason Three
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a festival of family reunion. If a wedding takes place on this day, the bride will have to separate from her family and cannot reunite, which does not align with the meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival's reunion. Therefore, it is not recommended to get married on the Mid-Autumn Festival day.

Is it Suitable to Visit Ancestors' Graves on the Mid-Autumn Festival?

You can visit ancestors' graves on the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunion. People working away from home may not be able to return to their hometown during other memorial days such as Qingming Festival, Zhongyuan Festival, and Hanshi Festival. However, during the Mid-Autumn holiday, they can return home to reunite with their parents. It is acceptable to go back to their hometown to visit ancestors' graves during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Moreover, some local customs include tomb sweeping during the Mid-Autumn Festival. For example, in areas like Yong'an, Shaxian, and Jianning in Fujian Province, people sweep tombs before or after the Mid-Autumn Festival, and families offer wine and meat to their ancestors. However, it is advisable to check the traditional calendar to confirm whether the Mid-Autumn Festival day is suitable for visiting graves. If it is not suitable, it is better to choose another day.

Are Highways Free on the Mid-Autumn Festival?

Highways are generally not free on the Mid-Autumn Festival.
According to the "Implementation Plan for Exempting Toll Fees for Small Vehicles During Major Holidays," the time period for free highway passage includes four national statutory holidays: Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, and National Day. The Mid-Autumn Festival is not included. However, there are some cases where highways are free during the Mid-Autumn Festival. For example, in 2023, the Mid-Autumn Festival coincided with the National Day holiday, so the National Day holiday included the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, and therefore highways were free during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
