Double Ninth Festival — Origin

The Double Ninth Festival is also known as the Mountain-Climbing Festival. On that day, people climb mountains, look into the distance, drink chrysanthemum wine facing the direction of their hometown, and eat Double Ninth cake, filled with longing for their loved ones. Many festivals have evolved from the sacrificial rituals of ancient times. The Double Ninth Festival is no exception; it originated from an ancient ceremony of sacrificing to the fire deity.
However, there is another story, originating from folk legends:
It is said that during the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a man named Huan Jing. At first, Huan Jing lived a very comfortable life, but one day a plague demon suddenly appeared in the village, spreading an epidemic that caused many people to die. Huan Jing's parents also could not escape, and he almost died too. After recovering, Huan Jing decided to eliminate this demon. He went to study under a master. He visited many places and finally learned that there was a immortal on an ancient mountain, so he went to become his disciple. After Huan Jing's hard work, he finally mastered the divine skills. When he left, his master said, "This year on the ninth day of the ninth month, the plague demon will come out again to harm people. You should go back quickly to eliminate the demon for the people." Before leaving, his master gave him a bottle of chrysanthemum wine and a bag of Chinese prickly ash leaves, telling him to distribute them to the villagers. On that day, Huan Jing arranged the villagers on a mountain, distributed the items to everyone, and then led the battle against the plague demon with a green dragon sword, finally killing the demon.
From then on, the villagers lived a peaceful life. After that, the villagers held activities such as mountain climbing, drinking chrysanthemum wine, and planting Chinese prickly ash leaves every ninth day of the ninth month to commemorate Huan Jing.
