In 1989, the Chinese government officially designated the ninth day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar as the "Chinese Senior's Day" and "Respect for the Elderly Day." The Double Ninth Festival thus became a festival that honors, respects, loves, and helps the elderly. On December 28, 2012, the "Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly" further legally stipulated that the ninth day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar each year is the "Elderly Day."
