The Meaning and Implications of Lixia

Lixia is the 7th solar term in the 24 solar terms of the traditional Chinese calendar, and the first solar term of summer. It marks the official start of the summer season, when the sun reaches a celestial longitude of 45 degrees. When the compass needle points to the southeast, it is Lixia, and everything at this time grows larger, hence the name "Lixia".
This solar term was already established during the late Warring States period (239 BC), marking the change of seasons and the beginning of the summer season of the year. According to the "Collected Explanations of the 72 Hou of the Monthly Orders": "“Lixia, the fourth month. The character ‘Li’ is the same as in Spring. ‘Xia’ means ‘prosperous’. At this time, all things have reached a state of prosperity.”
In astronomy, Lixia indicates that spring is about to end, and summer has begun. People commonly regard Lixia as an important solar term, marked by a significant rise in temperature, the coming of summer heat, increased rainstorms, and the peak growth period for crops.

What is Zhu Xia?

Zhu Xia is a term in Traditional Chinese Medicine, also known as Summer Heat or Zhuxia. It refers to a seasonal febrile disease characterized by fatigue, low-grade fever, and poor appetite, caused by external damp-heat invading the body, impairing the spleen and stomach, or summer heat depleting the body's vital energy, leading to impaired spleen function.
Additionally, Zhu Xia is also called "Kuxia" (Hard Summer), and it is a common illness in summer. After summer, the condition usually improves on its own, while some patients may experience a cyclical pattern of recurrence every summer. Zhu Xia is also a precursor to heatstroke, and if left untreated, it may lead to heatstroke.
