The Laba Festival was an ancient Chinese day for worshiping deities and ancestors, so there are many taboos associated with it. The Chinese calendar is one of China's traditional cultures, and people are accustomed to carrying out daily life and labor according to the suitability or inappropriateness of the days. Learn more about the special topic of the twelfth month of 2019 in the lunar calendar.

Taboos of the Laba Festival, what can and cannot be done on Laba Festival?

(1) No returning to the mother's house on Laba Festival
According to old traditions, there are certain days in a year when married daughters are not allowed to return to their mother's home, as it is considered unlucky and has its own significance.
Since entering the Laba month, the first taboo day is Laba. On this day, returning to the mother's house is considered unlucky for the mother-in-law, and the mother-in-law may die in a strange way after her passing. Another saying goes, "Don't eat the rice from your mother's house on Laba Day, or your family will never be able to repay the debt." This means that it would make your family poor.
Some sayings even believe that on the eighth, eighteenth, and twenty-eighth days of the twelfth lunar month, you should not spend the day at your mother's house.
(2) Do not eat Laba porridge past noon
On the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, it is called Laba Day in folk custom, and from then on, the "atmosphere of the New Year" gradually becomes stronger. The tradition of eating Laba porridge has existed in China for thousands of years, and it has its own unique background.
There are also some taboos related to eating Laba porridge in some places, which is that Laba porridge should not be eaten past noon. Every year, people start making Laba porridge the night before Laba Day, and consume it the next morning. If there is any left over, it can be shared with relatives, friends, and neighbors, but it should not be eaten past noon. There is a folk saying: "Eating porridge in the morning brings early harvest of crops in the coming year."
(3) Do not move house in the twelfth lunar month
From a feng shui perspective, the twelfth lunar month is relatively cold. If you move into a new house suddenly, the cold atmosphere might block the prosperity of the family. This sounds like it has some natural scientific reasoning.
However, with the improvement of home technology, many houses have been equipped with full-house heating, so there is no need to deliberately invite friends to sit in the new house to warm up the atmosphere as in the past. The reason for the saying "no moving house in the twelfth lunar month" is mainly concerned that people moving in might feel cold hands and feet, which is not good for health. However, for people who have home heating, this is no longer an issue.
