What festival is on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month
The ninth day of the ninth lunar month is the Double Ninth Festival. The Double Ninth Festival was already formed during the Warring States period, and by the Tang Dynasty, it was officially established as a folk festival. Since then, it has been passed down through successive dynasties. According to the "Book of Changes", the number "six" is defined as yin, and the number "nine" is defined as yang. On the ninth day of the ninth month, both the day and the month are yang, and two nines overlap, hence it is called "Double Ninth" or "Double Yang".
In the folk tradition, the Double Ninth Festival has the custom of climbing high mountains, so it is also known as the "Climbing Festival." Additionally, there are other names such as "Zhu Yu Festival" and "Chrysanthemum Festival." When celebrating the Double Ninth Festival, people usually climb high, appreciate chrysanthemums, drink chrysanthemum wine, wear zhu yu (a type of aromatic plant), and eat rice cakes. Moreover, since the term "jiu jiu" (nine nine) sounds like "jiu jiu" (long lasting), it conveys the meaning of longevity. Therefore, it is common to honor ancestors and promote filial piety and respect for the elderly on this day. Today, the Double Ninth Festival has also been given the connotation of "Senior Citizens' Day," a festival reminding everyone to respect and care for the elderly.
