Wu Month

Ancient Chinese people also matched the twelve terrestrial branches with the twelve months. The fifth month is also called "Wu Month".

Duan Yang

The fifth day of the fifth lunar month is called "Chong Wu", as the ancients often referred to "noon time" as "Yang Chen", so it is also called "Duan Yang".

Ming Tiao

"The Book of Songs" records "May, the cicadas sing". "Tiao" refers to cicadas. It means that in May, cicadas emerge from the ground and climb trees, starting the first clear sound of summer. Therefore, May is also known as "Ming Tiao".

Pu Month

In May, all kinds of grasses grow lushly. In "Dream of the Red Chamber", "Competing in herbs, all women show their talents" refers to the folk activity of competing in herbs. Among all the lush grasses in May, the most prominent one is the calamus. As one of the "Four Elegant Plants", calamus grows by riverbanks, standing tall and green, fragrant and beloved by people. Drinking calamus wine and inserting calamus leaves have become important customs for warding off evil on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. People also call May "Pu Month".

Liu Month

"Liu Month" gets its name from the blooming of pomegranate flowers in May. Han Yu wrote a poem saying "May, the pomegranate flowers shine brightly." In ancient times, young girls in Beijing during the fifth lunar month would wear bright orange or deep red pomegranate flowers as hairpins, dressing themselves beautifully. Later, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month became known as "Daughter's Day".
