The Eight Taboos of the Minor New Year
1、Women Should Not Offer Sacrifices to the Hearth GodThere is a folk saying: "Men do not worship the moon, women do not offer sacrifices to the Hearth God." It means that men should not go out to admire the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival, and women should not participate in offering sacrifices to the Hearth God on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month.
2、All the Family Should Attend the Hearth God Ceremony
A folk saying goes: "Whether or not the Hearth God is offered sacrifices, the whole family must come." This means that people who are away from home should return before the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month to prepare for the Hearth God ceremony and the Spring Festival.
3、Do Not Crush Garlic
In some regions, there is a taboo against crushing garlic on the Minor New Year. According to elders, if garlic is crushed on the Minor New Year, it may drive away the luck of the new year.
4、Do Not Kill Living Beings
In some rural areas, it is forbidden to kill or slaughter animals on the traditional Minor New Year, which is the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month. Animals are also living beings, and it is not advisable to disturb them on the Minor New Year.
5、Do Not Give Away Steamed Buns
Steamed buns made on the Minor New Year should not be given to others. According to folk beliefs, the steamed buns made on the Minor New Year are used for offerings to heaven and ancestors, and they are not suitable for giving to others.
6、Do Not Borrow Things
In some rural areas, it is considered taboo for others to borrow things on the Minor New Year, as well as for oneself to borrow things from others. Because the Minor New Year is as important as the first day of the Lunar New Year, borrowing and lending have bad connotations.
7、Do Not Collect Debts
It is believed in folk traditions that one should not collect debts on the Minor New Year, otherwise it would imply being on the road to collecting debts all year round.
