Introduction and Origin of the Start of Autumn
The Start of Autumn is the 13th solar term among the 24, when the Big Dipper points towards the southwest, and the sun reaches 135 degrees of the zodiac. It occurs between August 7 and 9 each year on the Gregorian calendar. The Start of Autumn is the first of the four seasons, marking the beginning of autumn. Autumn starts from the Start of Autumn and ends with the Start of Winter, which is a result of celestial movements. Entering autumn means that rainfall, storms, and humidity are at a turning point in the year, gradually decreasing or reducing.The Start of Autumn does not mean that the hot weather is over. During the early autumn period, the weather is still very hot. It is said "the heat is in the three fu periods," and there is also "autumn after one fu." After the Start of Autumn, there is at least "one fu" of hot weather remaining. The "three fu" periods include the initial fu, middle fu, and final fu, and their dates are determined by combining the dates of the solar terms and the Ganzhi (stem-branch) calendar. According to the calculation method of the "three fu," the day of the Start of Autumn often falls within the middle fu period, meaning that the scorching heat has not yet passed, and the real coolness usually comes after the White Dew solar term. The boundary between hot and cool weather is not at the Start of Autumn.

The Start of Autumn was one of the "four seasons and eight festivals" in ancient times, and there are folk customs such as worshipping the land god and celebrating the harvest.
