The Origin of Children's Day
The establishment of International Children's Day is related to a massacre during World War II - the Lidice Massacre. On June 10, 1942, the Nazi Germans killed more than 140 adult males over the age of 16 in the village of Lidice, Czech Republic, and all the infants, while sending women and 90 children to concentration camps. The houses and buildings in the village were all burned down, and a well-kept village was thus destroyed by the Nazis. After the end of World War II, the world economy was in depression, with thousands of workers unemployed, living in poverty and coldness. The situation of children was even worse; some suffered from infectious diseases and died in batches; others were forced to work as child laborers, suffering great hardships, and their lives and survival could not be guaranteed. In order to commemorate the Lidice Massacre and all children who died in wars around the world, to oppose the murder and poisoning of children, and to safeguard children's rights, in November 1949, the International Democratic Women's Federation held a council meeting in Moscow. Representatives from various countries angrily exposed the crimes of imperialist figures and reactionary forces in killing and poisoning children.
To ensure the right to survival, health, and education for children around the world, and to improve children's lives, the meeting decided that June 1st of each year would be the International Children's Day. Many countries expressed their agreement, especially socialist countries. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People's Government stipulated on December 23, 1949, that China's Children's Day would be unified with the International Children's Day.
