Traditional Clothing - Song Dynasty
Published: 2010/06/29   Author: yifan   Source: network

The clothing of the Song Dynasty largely inherited the styles and colors of the Tang Dynasty, but integrated them more thoroughly and naturally with tradition, giving a feeling of restoring the Chinese style.

The clothing of the Song Dynasty generally followed the styles of the Tang Dynasty. Common people mostly wore long robes with either a cross collar or a round collar. When working, they would tuck their clothes into their waistbands, and the clothes were usually black or white.

At that time, retired officials and scholars often wore a long robe called "Zhiduo", which had a front-opening design, large sleeves, and black borders on the sleeve ends, collars, and hem. They also wore a square tub-shaped hat called "Dongpo Jin".

The women's clothing of the Song Dynasty consisted of narrow-sleeved short tops and long skirts. Usually, an additional long-sleeved small jacket called "Beizi" was worn over the top, similar to today's vest. The collars and front of the Beizi were embroidered with beautiful patterns.

Men's Clothing:

Ceremonial robes (Mianfu): Starting from the Song Dynasty, the variety of Mianfu was reduced, and it became common to wear non-Mianfu attire for major ceremonies.

Court dress (Chaosu): In the Song Dynasty, a special decoration was added below the neck, known as "Fangxin Quling".

Official dress (Gongfu): In the Song Dynasty, the daily attire was used as the official dress.

Women's Clothing:

Ceremonial dress (Lifu): Its color was roughly the same as in the Tang Dynasty.

Daily attire (Changfu): It consisted of wide-sleeved tops, long skirts, and a Xiapai.
