It is acceptable to burn paper money at a crossroads during the Ghost Festival.
At a crossroads, especially a four-way intersection facing the four directions (east, south, west, and north), no matter how far away the deceased relatives are, they can receive the paper money sent by the living relatives. This tradition has been passed down for thousands of years in Chinese culture. On festivals such as the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, and the first day of the tenth lunar month, people commemorate their deceased relatives. Those who live close to their hometowns go to the tombs to burn paper money, while those living far away choose to burn it at a crossroads.
What time is generally chosen to burn paper money at a crossroads?
It is usually done in the evening or at night, before the Zi hour (23:00–1:00). The Ghost Festival, also known as the Ancestral Memorial Day, is held on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. It is also called the "Festival of the Dead," "Ghost Festival," "Sacrificing the Souls," and "Earth Official Festival." The customs include honoring ancestors, releasing river lanterns, worshiping the souls of the deceased, and burning paper money. Among the folk practices during the Ghost Festival, burning paper money is the most prominent. According to legend, paper money in the world of the living is equivalent to money in the world of the dead, and burning paper money is a way to send money to deceased ancestors.

1. On one side of the yellow paper, write the address of the recipient (who it is for), and do not write your own name and address. The paper burned at a crossroads has a special folding method, but it's hard to remember. In recent times, it is mostly not folded anymore.
2. Take something that can make a mark on the ground to a crossroads (if necessary, just find any intersection) and draw a circle, leaving an opening facing the direction of the person you are burning the paper for. In the center, draw an "X."
3. Place the paper inside the drawn circle and light it. While burning, recite the name of the person, offer prayers, wishes, and so on. During the burning process, throw a few pieces of paper outside the circle. One belief is that this is to bribe other ghosts, and another is that it is to share the blessings. Finally, continue until all the paper is completely turned into ash.
4. If it is a close relative, three kowtows should be made. If there is any resentment, you can spit on the ashes. After everything is done, stand up and leave without looking back.
