People in Yuxian usually call paper-cutting "window flowers". According to historical records, Yuxian paper-cutting originated during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, and has a history of more than 150 years. Its creators are mostly farmers who draw, carve, and dye by themselves, creating a vibrant world of paper-cutting with their skillful hands, turning their living environment into an artistic realm full of vitality and flourishing life. Yuxian paper-cutting stands out uniquely among the diverse types of folk paper-cutting in China, maintaining its vigorous vitality with its unique sense of humor and decorative nature.
Yuxian paper-cutting covers a wide range of themes with profound meanings and rich life atmosphere. Whether reflecting people's love for auspiciousness and happiness, or stories from the history, folk legends, and characters that are popular among the working people; whether reproducing the unique cultural background and ethnic customs of the north, or used for celebrations such as seasonal festivals, weddings, and birthdays, they all reflect the superb wisdom and rich imagination of folk artists. Combined with the well-arranged design, exquisite carving skills, and vivid coloring, each piece is very lively, interesting, and worth looking at.
Yuxian paper-cutting is famous both at home and abroad. Paper-cutting products are sold to Japan, South Korea, the United States, and countries in Southeast Asia.
In the birthplace of Yuxian paper-cutting - Nan Zhangzhuang Village in Weizhou Town, the people of Yuxian have built a "paper-cutting street", where visitors can watch the entire process of making paper-cutting anytime. Every winter, when the farming season is busy, the marketplaces of the ten major towns in Yuxian are filled with bicycles carrying wooden frames (commonly known as "liangzi") covered with colorful "window flowers", competing in beauty under the bright winter sun. This is a scene only found in Yuxian. Professor Yang Xianrang, head of the Folk Art Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, praised: "The atmosphere is unmatched anywhere else in the world."
