Most countries have established the second Sunday of May each year as Mother's Day. This has become an international celebration. It was established to praise the great maternal love in the world, commemorate the kindness of mothers, and promote the moral value of respecting mothers.
The founder of Mother's Day was Mrs. Anna Jarvis, who was born in 1864 in West Virginia, USA. Anna was beautiful, healthy, and a smart, capable, strong, wise, and sincere woman. She was also a filial daughter who deeply loved her mother.
In memory of her deceased mother and to fulfill her mother's wish, she decided to establish Mother's Day after her mother's death, and she publicly called for support and devoted all her energy and resources to it.
According to records: "Anna Jarvis's mother, Mrs. Ann Reeves Jarvis, worked as the director of the Sunday school of the Methodist Church in Grafton City, West Virginia, after the end of the American Civil War. She told many stories about heroes who died in battle during worship services in the church.
Anna was deeply moved by these stories and thus had a strong desire. She believed that a memorial day should be established to comfort mothers who had lost their sons. At the same time, she actively suggested establishing a Mother's Day to honor mothers around the world.
In 1905, when Anna Jarvis was 41 years old, her mother passed away, and she was very sad. In order to honor her mother and promote filial piety, she vowed to realize her mother's last wish — to establish Mother's Day. She first proposed her idea to the mayor of Philadelphia, and wrote letters to governors of states, members of Congress, church leaders, business leaders, women's groups, charities, and celebrities, making a loud call for support. As a result, she received widespread positive responses and enthusiastic support.
The origin story of Mother's Day. When did the celebration of Mother's Day begin? It is said that it started with the ancient Greeks, who began celebrating as a festival to honor Rhea, the mother of the Greek gods. The ancient Mother's Day originated in Greece, where the Greeks paid tribute to Hera, the mother of all the gods in Greek mythology. In the mid-17th century, Mother's Day spread to Britain, and the British set the fourth Sunday of Lent as "Mothering Sunday." On this day, young people who were away from home would return to their homes and bring small gifts to their mothers.
The modern concept of Mother's Day originated in the United States, initiated by Anna Jarvis (1864–1948). She remained unmarried and always stayed by her mother's side. After her mother passed away in 1905, Anna was heartbroken. Two years later (in 1907), Anna and her friends began writing letters to influential ministers, businessmen, and legislators to seek support in making Mother's Day a national holiday. Anna believed that children often neglected their feelings for their mothers, and she hoped that Mother's Day would make people think more about what mothers have done for their families.
The first Mother's Day was held on May 10, 1908, in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. During this festival, carnations were chosen as the flowers to give to mothers, and this tradition continued.
On May 7, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution designating the second Sunday of every May as Mother's Day, which was officially implemented by President Wilson on May 9. Since then, Mother's Day became a national holiday in the United States. Today, this festival has become an international commemorative holiday.
