Teacher's Day is not a traditional festival, but it is very important for all educators. What is the origin of Teacher's Day, and why is it set on September 10th? To learn more about Teacher's Day, come to Huayi Network.

What is the origin of Teacher's Day

In May 1931, educators such as Tai Shangqiu and Cheng Qibao proposed the establishment of Teacher's Day, issued the "Teacher's Day Declaration," and requested the then central government to approve it. On June 6, 1931, the first celebration of Teacher's Day was held at the Central University in Nanjing. However, the Ministry of Education at that time did not approve adding this holiday to the school calendar. Despite this, many schools continued to hold memorial activities on June 6th on their own.
By 1939, the Ministry of Education had decided to set the birthday of Confucius on August 27th each year as Teacher's Day, and issued the "Interim Measures for the Celebration of Teacher's Day," but it was never implemented.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in 1951, the Ministry of Education and the National Federation of Education Workers decided to abolish the Teacher's Day on June 6th and change it to be celebrated together with the International Labor Day on "May 1st." However, since it lacked specific characteristics of teachers, the implementation effect was very poor, and the Teacher's Day gradually disappeared.
It was not until January 21, 1985, when the Ninth Session of the Sixth Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed the State Council's proposal to establish a Teacher's Day, that the first Teacher's Day in China was officially determined to be September 10, 1985.

Why is Teacher's Day set on September 10th

Setting Teacher's Day on September 10th each year has mainly three reasons:
First, September 10th is also the origin date of World Teacher's Day. Although September 10th was officially determined as Teacher's Day in 1985, in fact, some places had already set September 10th as Teacher's Day earlier.
Second, September is the month when the new semester begins. Therefore, September 10th falls right in the season of the new term, which is very suitable for commemorating educators, symbolizing the cultivation and guidance of teachers for future generations, and helping students remember better.
Third, September 10th is a symbolic date. After all, before its official establishment, many regions had used September 28th (the birthday of Confucius) as Teacher's Day. The numbers 9 and 10 represent "never give up at ninety," expressing beautiful wishes for all educators.
