Analysis of the Virgin Mole
The virgin mole, also known as the "Shou Gong Sha", refers to the red mole on the arm of a young girl in ancient times. On the white and tender arms of young girls, a bright red mole was placed to test the chastity of women, which was common in ancient times, called "Shou Gong Sha".
People who were unaware of the old reason thought that "Shou Gong" meant to guard that sacred area.
In fact, "Shou Gong" is a type of gecko. Its body is slightly flattened, with a grayish back and small bumps, a white-yellow belly, a large mouth, thick tongue, and five toes on each of its four feet, with many wrinkles on the inner side of the toes, which allows it to stick to objects and climb vertically on walls, commonly known as "gecko".
According to ancient legends, people would keep geckos in jars or similar containers, feeding them cinnabar every day. After they ate about seven jin (approximately 3.5 kg) of cinnabar, they would crush the geckos and use their paste to apply on a woman's body. The red spot would remain permanently if she had not had sexual relations, but would disappear immediately once she did. However, this method was only applicable to unmarried women, and it was absolutely ineffective for married women. This practice became popular during the Song Dynasty along with the rise of Confucianism.
