Analysis of "Shou Gong Sha"
It was common in ancient times to mark a bright red mole on a girl's arm like a white lotus to test her chastity, known as "Shou Gong Sha". People who were unaware of the old customs thought that "Shou Gong" meant guarding that sacred place. In fact, "Shou Gong" refers to a type of gecko. Its body is slightly flattened, with a dark gray back and small raised bumps, a pale yellow belly, a large mouth, a thick tongue, and four feet each with five toes. The toes have many wrinkles and are good at clinging to objects and crawling up vertical walls, which is commonly known as a "gecko". According to ancient traditions, geckos were kept in jars or similar containers, and fed cinnabar daily. After eating about seven catties of cinnabar, they were crushed and used to mark a woman's body, creating a deep red spot. This mark would remain forever if no sexual relationship had occurred, but would disappear completely once there was any sexual activity. However, this method was only applicable to unmarried women, and it was absolutely ineffective for married women. This practice became popular during the Song Dynasty with the rise of Confucianism.
