The Xí surname originates from the Ji clan and is derived from a fief.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Duke Xian of Jin campaigned against the Di people. His younger brother Shu Hu bravely led the Jin army to break through the Di camp and defeat them. After this, Duke Xian granted him the territory of Xí (in the area of the lower reaches of the Qin River in Shanxi Province), and he was called Xí Zi. His descendants took the name of the fief as their surname, becoming the Xí family. They were descendants of Xí Wàn during the Spring and Autumn period. The Xí family held the position of minister in the state of Jin for generations, but later were exterminated by Duke Li of Jin. Some descendants fled to the state of Chu. During the reign of King Zhao of Chu, Xí Wàn served as the Left Inspector, and his descendants continued to use the surname Xí.
