Notable people with the surname Lu Qiu in history

Lu Qiu Ming

(c. ? - 450 BC), a person from the state of Lu. A famous historian during the Spring and Autumn period, the ancestor of the Lu Qiu clan. He once served as the chief historian of Lu, and was roughly contemporary with Confucius. He wrote a commentary on the "Spring and Autumn Annals," which became the book "Zuo's Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals," commonly known as "Zuo Zhuan." It is said that he lost his eyesight, and was called "Blind Lu Qiu." He once served as the chief historian of Lu, and was roughly contemporary with Confucius. He wrote a commentary on the "Spring and Autumn Annals," which became the book "Zuo's Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals," commonly known as "Zuo Zhuan." Because of his blindness, later generations called him "Blind Lu Qiu." Due to his family's long-term tradition of historical duties, he could collect historical records from various states to explain the "Spring and Autumn Annals," unlike Gongyang or Gu Liang who relied on oral traditions. Confucius praised him by saying, "Those who are eloquent, have beautiful words, and are overly respectful—Lu Qiu Ming would be ashamed of them, and so would I. Hiding resentment while being friendly with someone—Lu Qiu Ming would be ashamed of it, and so would I." Earlier scholars believed that Lu Qiu Ming's likes and dislikes were the same as those of the sage, so Confucius, who composed the "Spring and Autumn Annals" as the "Sage King," regarded Lu Qiu Ming as the "Sage Minister," recording the teachings of the Master. Because of his family's long-term tradition of historical duties, he could collect historical records from various states to explain the "Spring and Autumn Annals," thus forming the "Zuo's Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals." The "Guo Yu" (Discourses of the States) is also attributed to him.
