Shi Yan

Shi Yan (the exact years of birth and death are unknown), a famous music official of the legendary Yellow Emperor. He was in charge of music. It is said that when he played the stringed zither, the spirits of the earth would rise; when he blew the jade tuning pipe, the heavenly deities would descend; and by listening to the music of different countries, he could predict the rise and fall of dynasties.

Shi Kuang

Shi Kuang (c. 572–532 BC), also known as Ziyě; from Hongdong, Shanxi. A famous musician of the Jin state during the Spring and Autumn period.

Shi Juan

There were two people with this name. One was a music official of the Shang dynasty who created the soft and decadent music with King Zhou. When King Wu of Zhou attacked the Shang dynasty, he fled eastward and committed suicide by drowning in the Puyi River. The other was born in the state of Wei during the Spring and Autumn period and served as a music official under Duke Ling of Wei.

Shi Yiguan

A calligrapher of the Eastern Han dynasty, from Nanyang. Emperor Ling of Han loved calligraphy and summoned all the skilled calligraphers in the country to the Hongdu Gate. Among the hundreds of people who responded to the summons, only the eight-part script of Shi Yiguan was the best. His large characters were more than one chi in diameter, while his small ones contained thousands of words in a square inch. When he was in a tavern, he could write on the walls to sell.

Shi Shu

Shi Shu (exact years of birth and death are unknown), a famous minister of the state of Zheng during the Spring and Autumn period. Shi Shu was a well-known minister of Zheng, who governed wisely. Once, when Qi Huan Gong was preparing to unite the feudal lords to attack Zheng, Guan Zhong warned Qi Huan Gong: "Zheng currently has Sanzhan, Dushu, and Shi Shu, three capable ministers in power. There is no opportunity to exploit!"

Shi Dan

Shi Dan (unknown years of birth and death), also known as Zhonggong; from Dongwu, Langya (now Zhu Cheng, Shandong). A renowned minister, economist, and politician of the Western Han dynasty.

During the Western Han dynasty, he was selected as a filial and clean official and became a郎 (court attendant). He studied the "Book of Songs" and gained some reputation. Later, he rose to the position of Grand Master of State Affairs and was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Yiyang during the reign of Emperor Ping of Han.
