Some famous people with the surname Kui in history

Kui An

Kui An (died 340), a famous prime minister and military general of the Later Zhao regime during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Sixteen Kingdoms period. [2]

Kui An was the prime minister under the Later Zhao's founder Emperor Wu Shi Hu during the Eastern Jin and Sixteen Kingdoms period. He was intelligent, capable, and very wise. Not only did he have profound insights into administrative affairs and manage the Later Zhao state efficiently, but he also had unique strategies on the battlefield.

In the fifth year of Jianwu (AD 339) in the lunar calendar, the Eastern Jin Dynasty's Grand General of the East, Yu Liang, stationed at Wuchang, sent his subordinates Mao Bao and Fan Jun to garrison Zhu Cheng.

The founder of the Later Zhao was very hostile towards the Eastern Jin's maternal relatives, Yu Liang, and therefore appointed Kui An as the Commander-in-Chief and led five generals, including Shi Jian, Shi Min, Li Nong, Zhang He, and Li Tu, with an army of 50,000 to attack the areas of Jingzhou and the northern border of Yangzhou, while sending another 20,000 cavalry to attack Zhu Cheng.

Kui An adopted a strategy of "surrounding the point and attacking the relief force", continuously eliminating the strength of the Jin forces. At that time, Yu Liang had 240,000 Jin troops, which far exceeded the Later Zhao in military strength. However, Mao Bao was constantly seeking help from Yu Liang due to Kui An's tight pressure, and Yu Liang, believing in the city's strength, occasionally sent troops to rescue, resulting in the rescuing forces being continuously eliminated by Kui An, causing the defense to gradually weaken, creating a situation where the strength was shifting.

In September of the same year, Shi Min under Kui An defeated the Jin forces at Mianyin, killing the general Cai Huai. Kui An then ordered Li Nong to lead an army and capture Mianan. Zhu Bao also defeated the Jin forces at Baishi, killing five generals including Zheng Bao. Zhang He captured Zhu Cheng, killing more than 6,000 Jin soldiers. Mao Bao and Fan Jun were forced to abandon the city and break out, but were caught up by Kui An's light cavalry on the Yangtze River and forced into the river, drowning them.

Afterward, Kui An led the Later Zhao army to occupy Huting and then approach Jiangxia. The Eastern Jin's General of Yixiang, Huang Chong, and the Governor of Yixiang, Zheng Jin, all surrendered to Kui An. Subsequently, Kui An again led his army to surround Shicheng. At that time, the Governor of Jingling, Li Yang, resisted, and Kui An broke through it in one move, killing more than 5,000 enemies, greatly enhancing his reputation, and causing panic within the Eastern Jin court.

After eliminating the main forces of the Eastern Jin, Kui An ordered the army to withdraw. On the way back, he also plundered the eastern part of the Later Han State, taking over 7,000 households and relocating them to Youzhou and Jizhou, enriching the north of the Later Zhao. The founder of the Later Zhao highly praised Kui An's military and political abilities and continued to use him.
