Major events that occurred in 1960

January 1st — China's first set of 1000-line automatic telephone exchange machine, independently developed, was put into operation at the Wusong Telephone Office in Shanghai. The machine was named as SAA type.
January 1st — The French Mandate Territory of Cameroon declared independence and established the Republic of Cameroon. On the same day, the Liujiayu Hydropower Project was successfully impounded.
January 4th — The European Free Trade Association was established.
January 7th — The State Council approved the abolition of the Jingshan County system and merged it into Lishui County. In March 1962, it was transferred to Yunhe County. On June 30, 1984, the State Council approved the establishment of Jingning She Autonomous County.
January 9th — Construction of the Aswan Dam in Egypt began.
January 11th — Chad declared independence.
February 1960 — The State Council issued instructions: "Do a good job in receiving and resettling repatriated overseas Chinese," and established the "State Council Committee for Receiving and Resettling Repatriated Overseas Chinese," with Liao Chengzhi as chairman.
February 4th — The People's Daily reported that except for Tibet, all ethnic minority areas had basically achieved people's commune.
February 5th — The Fourth-level Cadre Conference on Medical and Health Work in Inner Mongolia was closed.
February 9th — China's self-designed and manufactured experimental liquid-fueled sounding rocket was successfully launched for the first time. This was a major breakthrough in China's space launch vehicle development.
February 9th — China first sent a ship to receive repatriated overseas Chinese persecuted in Indonesia.
February 10th — The 11th Plenary Session (expanded) of the Communist Party of Inner Mongolia and the First Secretary Meeting of the County Committees were held in Hohhot. The meeting passed the report "New Stage, New Situation, New Tasks" by Wu Lanfu, and decided to develop agriculture and animal husbandry rapidly.
February 13th — Nuclear test: France tested its first atomic bomb.
February 18th ~ February 28th — The 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics were held in the United States.
February 21st — Cuban leader Castro nationalized all commercial enterprises in Cuba.
February 24th — The Qingtongxia Yellow River Water Conservancy Project completed the closure and impounding of the dam.
February 29th — The Guangming Daily reported that China's ethnic minority intellectuals had reached about 300,000, including science and technology, education, news, and theoretical workers.
