What does the Leap Fourth Month mean?

The latest year for the Dragon Boat Festival usually has a leap fourth month.
In the early 21st century, the leap fourth month was a common leap month, occurring approximately every 8 or 11 years, and once every 38 years at most. Its frequency is second only to that of the leap fifth month.
However, the interval between leap months is not fixed. With the passage of time, the interval between leap fourth months has gradually increased.

What is a leap month?

A leap month is a method of inserting an extra month into a calendar, a unique cultural tradition in China and other regions that use the lunar calendar. In a lunar year, if a month appears twice, the second identical month is called a leap month.
To coordinate the differences between the tropical year and the lunar year, and to prevent the lunar calendar from falling out of sync with the tropical year and seasons, one leap month is inserted every two to three years. In ancient times, a 19-year cycle with seven leap months was used, but this was abolished in the Tang Dynasty's "Lingde Calendar," which adopted the method of inserting a leap month based on the absence of solar terms. Therefore, a leap month is added when needed. Sometimes, a leap month can also refer to a month that includes a leap day in a leap year of the Gregorian calendar (i.e., February in a leap year).
