When there are two Februaries in a lunar year, the second one is called a leap February. Years where the Spring Festival and the Dragon Head Raising Festival occur earliest and the Shangsi Festival occurs latest usually have a leap February.
A leap February occurs every four years in the Gregorian calendar when February has 29 days. In the lunar calendar, when there are two Februaries in a year, the second one is called a leap February. Both are caused by the fact that the cycles of the sun and moon relative to the Earth are not whole numbers of days.
The frequency of a leap February is second only to that of a leap March. In the 21st century, it occurs with moderate frequency, generally once every 19 years (such as 2004 and 2023). After that, the frequency of a leap February gradually decreases and becomes rare. In the 25th to 28th centuries, it occurs once per century. There is no leap February in the 29th to 30th centuries, 36th to 38th centuries, or 40th to 44th centuries.
