What are the customs of the leap month?
1. Leap Month Shoes:Leap month shoes are a folk custom in some regions of China. During a leap year or leap month, children should buy their parents a pair of shoes to express gratitude for their upbringing and to wish their parents good health and safety. In some areas, daughters who have married will buy their mothers a pair of shoes during a leap year. The leap month shoes must be worn in the previous month to be effective. Shrewd merchants have launched "filial piety" and "warmth" campaigns to attract customers, leading to a surge in women's shoe sales. "Leap month shoes, leap month wear, the elderly live for a thousand years." According to folklore, during a leap year or leap month, children should buy their parents a pair of shoes to express gratitude for their upbringing and to wish them good health and safety.
2. Other customs:
In the Jianghuai region, every time there is a leap year or leap month, married daughters should make leap month socks, leap month shoes, or clothes for their mother. It is said that "seventy-three, eighty-four, the Yanwang does not call them themselves," meaning that seventy-three and eighty-four are the end of the ten-day cycle, and children feel that the elderly may not live long. Therefore, they give the elderly some good things to eat, to fulfill their filial duty while the elderly are still alive.
In Fujian, there is a custom called "leap month meal" or "six relatives meal." This means that during a leap year or leap month, parents and siblings must invite their daughters or sisters back home to have a meal together.
