Qimen Dunjia, along with Da Liu Ren and Taiyi Shushu, is known as one of the three major Chinese divination methods. It uses the Luoshu pattern, the nine palaces, the Eight Trigrams, and the principles of the Five Elements' mutual generation and control to predict the advantages and disadvantages of geographical directions, thereby planning a person's itinerary and ultimately achieving the most favorable outcome for oneself, commonly used in fortune-telling and divination. Qimen Dunjia refers to "Qimen" because it uses the three "Qi", namely Jia, Bing, and Ding. It also includes the eight "Men" such as Xiu, Sheng, Shang, Du, Jing, Si, Jing, and Kai, hence the name "Qimen". Among the heavenly stems, "Jia" is the most respected but not revealed. The six Jia are usually hidden within the six "Yi" - Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui. The three "Qi" and six "Yi" are distributed across the nine palaces, and "Jia" does not occupy a single palace alone, hence the name "Dunjia".

Qinmen Dunjia can simulate the trend changes caused by human intervention, derive corresponding environmental planning and behavioral feng shui strategies, and thus transform cosmic energy, change the development trend of things, and alter one's fate. This is exactly what the Taoist saying "My destiny is in my hands, not in the heavens" means. Therefore, through one Qimen Dunjia chart, both prediction and adjustment can determine the outcome. That is, prediction, selection of auspicious times, secret methods, and environmental handling, as well as behavioral strategy plans can all be completed based on the same Qimen Dunjia chart.
