Seven Planets and Four Remaining Stars Calculation Methods:
There are four main calculation methods for the Seven Planets and Four Remaining Stars. One is the equatorial star system, which is similar to Indian astrology, but the way of determining the ascendant and the degrees of the lunar mansions differs. The starting point of this system also differs from that of India, with its own unique Chinese characteristics. The other three methods are the ecliptic solar system combined with the ancient star system, the corrected precession ancient star system, and the modern star system.First, the combination of the ecliptic solar system and the modern stars. The ecliptic system uses the vernal equinox moment as 0° Aries, and the 28 lunar mansions are arranged according to their current actual positions. This system benefits by integrating the 24 solar terms into the chart, demonstrating the power of the sun's position in our solar system, while also incorporating the positions of the stars. This method combines Western astrology with the stars and is a method advocated by Mr. Li Guangpu. However, this method has a major issue: ancient astrology primarily used the equatorial system, and this approach causes the lunar mansions to change, making the traditional zodiac symbols like "rat in the mouse hour" and "ox in the ox hour" disappear. It is also difficult to integrate with the Eight Characters, leading to errors in applications such as feng shui.
Second, the combination of the ecliptic solar system and the ancient stars. By directly applying the ancient stars into the ecliptic solar system, the traditional zodiac symbols can be achieved. However, this method results in the lunar mansions being different from their actual positions, which is similar to using the classical astrological "界" system as the 28 lunar mansions. This method never requires re-calculating the chart.
Third, the ancient star system. What is the ancient star system? It refers to fixing the 24 solar terms at specific points within the ancient stars. For example, the start of spring is fixed at a certain degree of a particular lunar mansion, and then the 12 zodiac signs are divided in a fixed manner. This leads to significant differences between these zodiac signs and the Western 12 signs because they are determined by the positions of the lunar mansions. This approach uses the sun's position to determine the 28 lunar mansions, where the lunar mansions are no longer real but virtual. However, this allows time and location to be unified on one chart, perfectly combining the solar terms and the 24 mountain directions. It also enables the use of traditional zodiac symbols, ensuring that there is always a rat in the "Zi" hour and an ox in the "Chou" hour. The difference between this method and the second is that one fixes the zodiac signs based on the solar terms, while the other fixes the lunar mansions based on the solar terms. The problem with this method is that the 28 lunar mansions are virtual, not real.
Fourth, the equatorial star system. This is the format used in the Zheng Star Chart. When you observe the planets in the sky from Earth, this is the chart you get. In fact, this is the coordinate map of Earth in the universe, using the positions of the 28 lunar stars to locate Earth's position in the cosmos! The 12 zodiac signs are divided in a fixed pattern, so there is always a rat in the "Zi" house and an ox in the "Chou" house. However, the problem with this chart is that the sun's position during the 24 solar terms changes due to precession, and the zodiac hours "Zi", "Chou", "Yin", and "Mao" are no longer related to the solar terms. This chart is more of a cosmic map and lacks close connection with the solar system.
