2. The Five Elements of the Sixty Jiazi
Ancient calendars were lunar calendars, using the stems and branches to record years, from Jiazi and Yi Chou to Ren Xiu and Gui Hai, which is called one Jiazi.
Each year is composed of one heavenly stem and one earthly branch.
The 60 Jiazi years are matched with the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Each element is paired with twelve stems and branches, forming 60 types of "elements."
